In the summer of 2022 the Lee County Sheriff Office held a one day event called Summer Bash 2022 which cost the Taxpayers of Lee County over $ 200,000.00. This event was held at the Jet Blue Park in Fort Myers, FL and the advertisement for this event promoted the return of children to school.
At this event gifts consisting of backpacks, rulers, pencils, shirts and other items were given away with the name of Sheriff Carmine Marceno on all these items. The cost of these items was $ 44,000.00. What is the public purpose for this event and could that purpose have been met with a different approach with a better use of these funds?
The total cost of all service and items purchased is documented at $ 161,747.00. There was a total of 59 employees at the event. There were 21 employees that were paid for being at the event. The additional 38 employees were given time off from their regular duties (Comp Time) for usage at a later date. These Comp hours would have been during the pay period they were in. It is believed that taking the documented expenditures and adding these individuals to the payroll along with the equipment that this event would have cost the taxpayers an estimated $ 200,000.00.
